Viva Monsters! / New Movie Monsters...

Let's celebrate April Fool's Day today with some spoofy creature feature fun and two of MAD Magazine's very finest artists, shall we? First up, classic monster gags by the amazing Sergio Aragones, followed by Wally Wood's "New Movie Monsters from Madison Ave." (PS: I'm not sure where any of these originated, all are taken from paperback reprints from the 60's and 70's.)

+++++++++++++++++++++++

And congratulations to Jeff Overturf, he's the big winner of THOIA's "6 of Me on the Prowl" contest. And since the 6 Karswells couldn't agree between all the great entries in this contest, I left the decision up to my son Zander, who at the moment is probably the biggest Three Stooges fan on the planet, annnnd his choice was a no-brainer. Jeff wins himself a copy of Peter H. Brothers new book "Mushroom Clouds and Mushroom Men: The Fantastic Cinema of Ishiro Honda", published by Authorhouse. Nice work Jeff, please send me your mailing address! And thanks to everyone that joined in the fun, there's lots more horrific contests coming in 2010!

Holy crap, you let your kid judge that. Now I feel, if possible, even dirtier than before. Excellent prize, by the way--good job Mr. Overturf!

This is an awesome post, Karswell. I totally love this stuff. If I were to rank every comics-related thing I've really loved since I was very young, second place has gotta be Sergio Aragones. I didn't even have to be able to read to love his stuff in my parents' MADs when I was a little kid. Here's the one man who most successfully brought silent-era slapstick to comics. As a teen I bought, like, every single GROO there is.

>Holy crap, you let your kid judge that.

He's 5 Mr C, and knows very little concerning the naughty things you speak of. And yes, All Hail Groo!

>Your son displays excellent judgment and good taste.

It's all quite hopeless, Monster Kid genes run DEEP in my loins.

>HAD A BUNCH OF THE SERGIO PAPERBACKS WHEN I WAS A KID

Me too, the Aragones scans come from a book I've had ever since I was 5 or 6... never letting that one go.

> i didn't get the "Terror From The Earth's Core" one...

Hillbillies and a moonshine still, I guess some "mountain dew" is more deadly and potent than others.

And congrats again to Jeff Overturf on the win! Your book is going in the mail tomorrow.

We have lots of good stuff lined up for April, including the long awaited return to Christopher Lee's Treasury of Terror, violent nazi and crime horrors, a long distance birthday dedication, and possibly another look at a Dell Classic... don't miss a single post!

"Attack of the Mushroom People" is one of two horror movies that actually caused me to recoil in horror as a small child thanks to "that scene" near the ending. I would love to see it again all these decades later.

Thanks for the warm memories!

Fun post, it's always nice to see classic Mad artists like Aragones and Wood get some respect.
I had not heard about the Honda book and will have to look into it more. Thanks!

If anyone's interested in seeing more MAD horror spoof stuff just let me know and I'll occasionally mix it in with the decapitated heads and shotgun blasts to the face. Hey, I'm easy...

NEXT UP: One Naughty Nazi!

All of the MAD items by Wood are parodies of well-known advertisements that appeared in national magazines (Time, etc.) circa 1960.

The gloved hand in "The Terror from the Earth's Core" is holding a jigger of liquor. (I don't remember the brand being advertised.)

"Anonymous" above should read "Drew" (not that anyone cares)...I hit the wrong key and published the comment prematurely.
